Connecting camera-assisted waste sorting to a bin-monitoring app.
BinGo addressed waste sorting on campus, where people could be unsure which bin to use for organic and non-organic waste. Our five-person team paired a camera-assisted bin with an application for cleaning staff to monitor which bins were full.
Connect Disposal to Collection
The camera identified the waste and the corresponding bin opened. Users could override the automatic choice. The staff application showed bin status so the people collecting waste could identify full bins.
During team testing, camera detection, bin opening and fullness updates in the application worked together as an integrated prototype. This demonstrated the connection between the physical bin and the software, beyond a standalone interface mockup.
Scope & Limitations: Testing confirmed the prototype workflow, not a campus-wide deployment or measured reduction in waste. Public gallery screens use sample bins and illustrative status values rather than a live sensor feed.
I was the full-stack engineer, responsible for the frontend and backend. The team also included a project manager, a UI/UX designer and two IoT engineers. My scope was the application side of the connected system; the IoT engineers owned the device work.
